Discovering Slovakia: Liptovska Mara Dam

Liptovská Mara is the third largest dam in Slovakia. Located in the Liptov region, it is my favourite stop on the way from High Tatras, Jasna, Košice or other road trips in the Liptov region (Bešeňová, Lúčky, Hrabovo, Vlkolínec, Pribylina…). It was built to help control the flow of river Vah, which is the longest river in Slovakia. Construction of the dam began in 1969 and it took six years. Inhabitants of 13 villages were relocated and their villages are now under water. In addition, there is a hydropower plant of 198 MW generating electricity since 1975.
