Discovering Slovakia: Liptovska Mara
Liptovská Mara is the third largest dam in Slovakia. Located in the Liptov region, it is my favourite stop on the way from High Tatras, Jasna, or other road trips in the Liptov region (Bešeňová, Lúčky, Hrabovo, Vlkolínec, Pribylina…). It was built to help control the flow of river Vah, the longest river in Slovakia. Construction began in 1969 and took six years. Inhabitants of 13 villages were relocated and their villages are now under water. In addition, a hydropower plant of 198 MW is also a part of the dam.
