Discovering Slovakia: Open-air museum in Vlkolinec

Vlkolinec is a small picturesque village located in the centre of Slovakia near Ruzomberok. It is an open air museum with 45 historical buildings, which have “the traditional features of a central European village with traditional log houses, often found in mountainous areas,” according to UNESCO. You guessed it, it is also UNESCO World Heritage site, similar as the Wooden Church in Tvrdošín in Orava.

Vlkolinec is located in Liptov region, near the city of Ruzomberok on the other side of the mountain Malino Brdo, which is a popular ski resort in the winter and hiking resort in the summer. There is a narrow and winding road leading uphill to the village, but the left turn from the main motorway from Ruzomberok to Donovaly is a bit difficult to find. Beware of herds of cattle, sheep or goats on the road and occasionally a reckless driver speeding down the hill. When almost at the top, you will spot the colorful little houses with wooden roofs, so characteristic of this region. I would recommend you to walk around those three streets and admire the wooden church tower or the colorful houses. Many of the houses are still inhabited and it looks a bit odd to see some modern cars parked in the courtyards.  Inside the village, you will find also some souvenir shops, galleries with beautiful paintings of the village and refreshments. I bought the best honey in one of the souvenir stalls near the parking lot.
